I've got a set of methods I use in my daily routines. They're constantly changing and improving. Nothing is nailed down or written in stone. As I look at where I started, I'm happy to see things have come a ways since then. My hope is that method posts like these offer you encouragement in the processes you've started or are interested in. Take them, adapt them, and celebrate the progress as it happens. Then let's compare notes, I'd love to hear your stories along the way.
My mom's brain is packed full of homeopathic remedy solutions for everything from a little scratch to a deep wound. She had 3 tattered books with the names, uses and symptoms, and is always eager to offer a remedy for cramps or something worse. Along with homeopathy and flower essences, growing up we had a few bottles of lavender or peppermint essential oil she'd drop into a diffuser and "monster spray" for under our beds (water and lavender for tired-scared-of-the-dark-kids). I use to wonder what my "medicine" would be. What little helpful tips I'd keep in my back pocket for a friend with a headache or the hubby with the common cold. So when my mother-in-law asked me if I wanted to join her for an essential oil party, I said yes.
Though slightly overwhelming in price and quantity, my first oils class was full of useful information like: 1 drop of peppermint essential oil is equivalent to 100 cups of peppermint tea! Or not all essential oils are equal, some aren't actually the essence of the plant but imitations. Looking back, I remember wishing there was a guide for what to do first. While there isn't and you should do what works for you and your family, here is the method I've adopted.
Know Your Why & Do a Little Digging
I decided to start using essential oils because I wanted simple, from-the-Earth ways of being healthy and reducing stress. Knowing these things helped me decided what oils to invest in first. I had friends and family who used Doterra and Young Living. I did some research about both because I was curious if there was a better or cheaper option. I landed on Young Living because of the variety and the ease (more people near me used it). They are both wonderful companies and you can't go wrong with either.
I went with Lemon for it's healthy drinking benefits. Lavender for it's first aid/stress reducing benefits. Peppermint for it's ability to curb my car sickness and nervous tummy. When I bought them, I drank the lemon, used peppermint in a glass spray bottle with water, and lavender all over my body before bed. These uses shifted quickly to drinking peppermint with hot water and dropping lavender into the tub. Each new use had me more excited to buy a kit.
To Buy a Kit or Not to Buy a Kit
I knew after using my oils for a few months that I wanted a full kit from Young Living. The great thing about that is you become a Young Living member but you aren't required to do anything after that. I felt safe knowing I didn't have to sell oils or even tell anyone I was using them. I could just simply buy them and use them in my home. So I did. I signed right up, got my starter kit and tripled my oils in less than a month for a fraction of the cost. Plus, I got a diffuser which made yet another opportunity to use my oils.
To Do the Essential Rewards Program or Not
I used my whole kit for months before I thought about doing the rewards program. I wasn't sure how fast I'd go through the oils, if I would stay committed to using them regularly or if I could afford spending money every month just for oils. There are some rules with the rewards program, there is a monthly minimum you must spend to be eligible for rewards points. Turns out the rewards program works great for me. Here is how I knew. I started finding more ways to use the oils and people around me started to express interest. My family asked me to get them a few to try. I've consistently used Essential Rewards for 2+ years now and the free products I've received have been wonderful additions to my life.
Don't Rush the Process
All good things take time. I've noticed a shift in my health because of oils like Theives and Purification. Lemon oil has changed my water drinking game. The amount of times I have to swallow drugs for a headache or cramps has been cut in half. These changes took time. I've committed to the use of oils and because of that commitment I get to see the long-term benefits. For the most part, oils, like working out, aren't a "do it once and be cured for life" kind of thing. So allow the process to unfold naturally.
Do More Digging
Learning is a serious process. I got a book from Young Living about essential oils. I look up uses, benefits, and ideas all the time. With each new discovery I order a new oil. I take the time to let it sink into my life. Some oils I use way more than others and some I simply just don't love. That is part of the process of learning. With good tools like books, the internet and people, the ideas are endless!
Looking back at where I started, smelling and applying essential oils, I have grown immensely! I cook with my oils, I make all my own skin care with my oils, I diffuse my oils, use them as perfumes, take them in capsules. They are a creative project to me and I love trying them with just about everything I do.
It's Not Black and White
There are definitely steps of safety with essential oils, you shouldn't just ingest any oil of any kind. Some are more safe to use than others. So you see, research is important. There also isn't a right or wrong way to go about how to start to use oils. You might want a full kit and to dive right in or you might start like me, just a small handful of your favorites to see how you like them! Do what works for you and your family and most importantly have fun!
Below are some of my favorite blends to diffuse at home right now, enjoy them! These oils bring me so much joy and are changing my life one little drop at a time!
